Would you like to join the friends and help preserve st martin's church and strengthen the village community?
Would you like to become a "Friend of St Martin's?" We believe the Church in Bladon is more than the building where worshippers meet weekly, but extends to the whole community of whatever faith, or indeed no faith at all. The Friends is registered with the Charity Commissioners, with the aims of contributing towards the maintenance of the Church and Churchyard and helping to foster a sense of community in Bladon.
The Friends was founded in 2001 and since its foundation has contributed, amongst other things, towards redecoration of the interior of the Church, new robes for the choir, new hymn books, a piano, two large noticeboards with cupboards under and a carpet for the display area, a new roll of honour, renovation of the benches in the Churchyard, and in 2014 complete replacement of the heating in the Church. The Friends also provide cards, photographs and CDs for sale to visitors in order to raise funds.
Contributions have also been made towards improving the facilities in the Church Room, which provides a communal space for the congregation as well as a venue for village activities such as the Garden Society, and the PCC and other committees. The Room is also used for a Toddlers Group and a Lunch Club, both run by the Friends.
Friends fundraising events are held from time-to-time, including a St Martin’s Feast in November and a ‘Beat the Doldrums’ evening in February. In 2014 a ‘Messiah Sing-in’ was organized which proved very popular and may become an annual event. The Friends also organize events to welcome newcomers to Bladon and introduce them to the various activities that take place in the village which they can join.
As a Friend you will be helping us to continue our work in support of St Martin’s and the local community. Friends receive occasional newsletters with details of events and achievements.
